We encourage shoppers to provide us with suggestions and comments of any aspect of our organization. Thank you to all who have participated in this program over the years! It has helped us with filling the shelves with what you want, allowed us to participate in the community conversation of ways to better our organization, and most important, provided us a direct link for communications between our staff and shoppers. Having access to an online format is new for us, and we are looking forward to it becoming a more streamlined way to provide information. At the stores, we will continue with using the paper forms for the suggestion boxes, with the answers posted here.
Of note: the answers here may change within a moments notice … for the most up to date information, you are welcome to contact us

LessWA Organic Wines
Hi - Please consider developing a wine section highlighting WA Organic wines. Thank you.
Answer:
We try to bring in WA and Organic WA wines whenever possible. Often times, the wines are more expensive, and our customer base has not been willing to purchase the wines over other Organic wines. We have many WA wines currently, but again, due to the prices, we are limited by what people are willing to spend. Thank you for your suggestion.

Store Expansion
Please consider putting store expansion at the top of your priority list, not staff offices in the new lot. Move the credit union there & expand the cramped crowded store. I definitely would shop there more often. Thank you
Answer:
Hi,
We completely agree that expanding retail square feet is top priority for expansion right now.
The lot across the street was a necessary piece of the puzzle due to the limited size of the Eastside lot and the loss of parking when we expand the retail space.
It sounds like you got the wrong impression from the blurb, but we are on the same page here. Also, the credit union moved out a long time ago. That space is where our customer service is presently, as well as beer and wine.

Melt Vegan Butter
You were carrying Melt brand vegan butter for about $4.99/lb, and we really liked it. I don't know whether it's temporary or if you've discontinued it, but I think it's important to note that the vegan butter option when I was in last week cost something like $4.99 for 8 OZ, which means about $10/lb, so TWICE as expensive as the Melt brand. I think the lowest possible cost should be a major factor in ordering decisions when quality is similar, and there isn't some reason of conscience for choosing one brand over another. Thanks for your time.
Answer:
We carried Melt to cover for the Earth Balance that was found to have palm oil in it. We are moving away from carrying palm oil, as its impacts on our planet, specifically the rainforest. and not in line with our values in product selection guidelines. We then found that the Melt brand also had the palm oil.so as we try to find the most affordable products, and increase access to good food,we find in this case, we want to prioritize our relationship to sustaining life on our planet.

Had a poor interaction with staff today - apples were unlabeled and I didn't know which ones they were, as my child had picked them out. The employee rolled his eyes at me. He asked if I was a co-op member and I said yes, then he rudely followed with "Not REI co-op. This co-op," as if I didn't know where I was. Staff are consistently standoffish and disaffected, but I do not expect to be treated rudely. It is antithetical to a community business to have unhelpful and rude staff.

Thank you for your suggestion! Though we currently carry some Thai Kitchen items, we’re trying to procure brands that are a bit more unique. (A slow process admittedly!) Thai Kitchen is readily available and is owned by McCormick. Not a criticism of any of sort, just an observation. Currently, we carry Mekhela Red Curry (organic) and Thai Home Red Curry. I have been shopping at the Co-ops in Olympia for ten years. I am finding that the quality of produce and salad bar have gone done considerably and the prices keep going up. I am not seeing much local produce. I also find it disturbing that people working at the Co-ops see it fit to proclaim their activism and ignorant political views while working at the Co-ops. They don't seem to consider that not everyone holds their views nor do they want to be subjected to such views while shopping. Yesterday, an employee ( not sure if she is a volunteer or actual employee because I didn't recognize her) tied her dog in front of the Co-op in the heat and sun without access to any water. The dog has a heavy coat and seemed over-heated. I inquired about the dog and non of the workers seemed to know who the dog belonged to. Not only is this a blatant lie, but these people didn't care, nor did they show any concern for the dog. Two shoppers agreed with me and also expressed their concern for the dog. I asked for a bowl to give the dog water. I called the police because animal services is never available for animals in Olympia. While I was waiting to leave a message for an officer, which is what I was instructed to do, a Co-op worker came outside and told me to hang up my phone and she proceeded to harass me and follow me to my car. She also told me to leave the Co-op and exaggerated by telling me I was being hysterical, which is total hyperbolic bullshit. I have seen a lot of decent, hardworking folks leave this Co-op throughout the years and they still live in the area. Now, I am seeing why a lot of people don't give the Co-ops business. I will do my shopping elsewhere. There are other Co-ops. I have met a few nice people, but not enough to continue putting up with people who are ignorant and insular regarding... everything.
Answer:
Thank you for your suggestion. Our experience of this incident was different. Regarding the dog in question, after you informed us we checked in on it, determined it was safe and then paged the store to find the owner. We care for both animals and people here, provide water to anyone in need and even have free dog treats. Our staff members also recall the interactions they had with you differently. We understand that you no longer wish to shop with us and we wish you the best.

The co-op parking lot is very unsafe. I've suggested before that you have another crosswalk by the entry door and that you post a sign about crosswalk safety. People stroll through the co-op parking lot and it makes for a very dangerous situation. I brought this up before when I almost hit a pedestrian when backing out. It happened again the other day. What do I need to do to bring this to the co-op's attention? Attend a board meeting?

Hello- could you please bring back the Parmesan cheese in bulk like it was before Covid? It know the other co-op did bring it back. Far less waste for sure! Please consider.
Answer:
Thank you for your suggestion about having shredded parmesan in bulk bins again, like we did before COVID. Sustainable practices are a priority for the Co-op.
We have opted to use compostable containers at the Eastside instead of bringing back the bulk bins. It is a better option for us in terms of the need to change out and wash the containers and scoops daily, constantly cleaning the area every time someone fills their container, cleanliness of the display and food safety. It also prevents a surprising amount of food waste daily as people spilled cheese almost every time a personal container was filled.
We do sell the 3 lb bags at 10% off, available without a bulk order from the case. And of course, the same cheese is available in bulk bins at the Westside location. Additionally, look for in store “cut and wrap” cheeses in our case that we package in biodegradable cheese paper and soft cheeses such as Brie, Cambozola and St Angel wrapped in biodegradable clear cellulose!

LessBulk Salad Greens Westside
Why did the Bulk Salad Greens go away? It is a great thing for the Co-op to do and saves on plastic. Please consider bringing it back.
Answer:
Thank you for your question.
We took it away during the pandemic to avoid too much cross-contamination and to reduce labor a little since we have to be more careful with salad because of health codes then the other produce and it requires more dishwashing.
We did bring it back for a few weeks recently, but sales can be very slow. We don’t want to keep the same greens on the display for more than a couple days, so we decided to disco it again. We will likely bring it back at some point, but we have to make decisions based on how fresh we can keep it in relation to demand.
Baru Nuts
Green Valley Sour Cream
You already carry Green Valley organic lactose free yoghurts and cottage cheese, but Green Valley also has delicious organic sour cream lactose free also. I hope you will start carrying that too.
Answer:
We try from time to time to bring in more lactose free products of theirs, but to no avail, they oft go to pull. (expire)
We’re more than happy to order cases of things for people as a special order, but sadly we can’t guarantee that we can keep the green valley cottage cheese and sour cream as a staple.
Thank You for your suggestion!
Bulk Tofu
Are you going to get bulk tofu again? I was lost with covid but it would be nice to get it back . Thanks.
Answer:
We have not began to make preparations to reintroduce bulk tofu, yet.
That may take a bit of a reset, to have the tub-o-water cut back into the set.
Plus we’ll need to get a steady supply source.
So,sorry to say there is no information yet,
as to when that will happen.
LessOat Malk
Oat Malk is delicious. <3. Please bring it in! Thank you. Please call if you get it.

Maybe when we have an empty spot
that we are trying to fill,
We can advocate for Malk Oat Milk.
and we’ll reach out when that happens

As far as WW hamburger buns, we’re sorry that we can’t get them at the moment.

LessHow to eat Swiss Muesli and thank you!
I purchased the bulk Swiss Muesli. Does this style require any special preparation or is it meant to be eaten directly? This was my first visit to your Co-op. I'm a member of the Skagit and Bellingham Co-ops and love your bread selections. Thank you!
Answer:
Muesli is traditionally eaten “as is” like a cold cereal/granola
There is no reason to not prepare it hot as one would oatmeal, it’s just rolled oats and fruit and nuts.
It isn’t traditional, but would surely be delicious.
We appreciate the compliment on our bread selections. We have some amazing bakeries in Olympia! Thank you for visiting. Hope you stop by again when you pass through Olympia again.

Biodegradable Overnight Pads
I have been searching for a biodegradable incontinence/menstrual pad and the Cora overnight pads looks like a good option that I would hope to find at the Coop.
Answer:
Thank you for your suggestion. These do look really cool. I’d love to bring them in, but Cora doesn’t do direct wholesale and isn’t available through any of our current vendors. I’ll keep my eyes peeled though for any vendors bringing them in though. In the meantime, Cora does offer direct retail from their website which could be an option for your needs.

DIY eco friendly cloth bags
In the latest OFC Table (spring 2022) I read the Eco-Friendly Co-op Shopping article. There is a suggestion to make cloth bags out of t-shirts and a stapler. I was horrified at the image of sharp pointy staples in my food!! Maybe safety pins as a safer alternative?? If not just sewing the bags?
Answer:
Thank you for the suggestion, I will pass along the thoughts to the author who is interested in ongoing ideas around this, and serves on our Eco Planning Committee.

LessGoat ice cream in the winter
Vanilla goat ice cream please.
Answer:
Thank you for your suggestion. We love Goat ice cream too! However, every year when the Goats are kidding, milk is not produced for items like ice cream. Similar to the dairy dept, there is a period in the year when goat milk is unavailable and we are not able to get any. We always carry the 2 flavors of Goat milk ice cream that our distributor carries and vanilla has been and is available on the Eastside. We hope it’s in stock when you come in.
LessVegan and Gluten Free Entrees
Currently there are no frozen entrees that are both gluten free and vegan. A gluten free and a dairy free frozen pizza would be amazing. Also, Amy's frozen enchilada that is vegan is great (I usually get it at Ralphs) Please carry something for when I'm hungry and need a quick dinner. Thanks!
Answer:
Thank you for your recommendations. We will bring in the Amy’s Vegan Enchilada’s again and will continue to look for a pizza that is gluten free and vegan. Daiya is one brand, however, that have never sold well for us so we do not carry them. We will also try to bring in more rotating gluten free and vegan meals. There is currently Amy’s vegan and gluten free Mac N Cheese.
Thanks so much.
Bulk corn chowder
I used to always buy the bulk dried corn chowder and pea soup mixes that were ready to eat with just hot water. But they've been out for months. Can you tell me what happened? Are they coming back? If not, can I make a special order? Thanks.
Answer:
Unfortunately, the company that makes those has gone out of business.
There are not any organic instant soup mixes available in bulk at this time from our research so far.
Sake selection
I've only seen Junmai style sake at either store. I'd love to Nigori or any other type mixed in. I'd buy more regularly. Getting tired of Junmai.
Answer:
We carry Sacred Mist – Honjozo Nigori and Snow Grass – Honjozo sake on the Westside coop. We rotate our Sakes due to space so we do not always have these two but we do stock them. Keep checking our shelves at the Westside. Thank you so much for your interest.
LessKernza flour or cereal
Can you please carry Kernza either in flour form or cereal form? Thanks!
Answer:
I wish we could carry Kernza. I am a big fan of perennial wheat and all the research that has gone into making this happen.
I am unable to find it as available from any of our distributors.
I think at this time it is still too new and hopefully will be available in organic bulk quantities soon.
LessHow to use bulk Vanilla Sugar
Give quantity for Vanilla Sugar use.
Answer:
Thank you for your suggestion.
The vanilla sugar that the Bulk Department sells (located in the Herb and Spice Rack) is used as a flavored sweetener in a baked good’s batter or dough, but it can also be used as a final touch sprinkled on the tops of those fresh out of the oven cakes, pies, and of course, cookies.
Vanilla sugar can replace two ingredients that show up in many recipes for baked goods. For baked goods, use it instead of sugar and vanilla in everything from cake batters to cookie doughs. The type of sugar in the vanilla sugar that the Co-op sells is coconut sugar.
Vanilla sugar is commonly used as a finishing sugar. Finishing sugar is made by powdering it and dusting it on your baked goods after baking. Finishing sugar can also be used: instead of frosting, on top of biscotti, on top of cakes/brownies, etc.
Vanilla sugar is also a great addition to homemade frostings and whipped cream. The flavor is concentrated, so you only need to use a little to pack quite a punch. Vanilla sugar is great for rimming cocktail glasses, sprinkling over oatmeal or yogurt as well. Start with a small sprinkle and taste!
Snow Days Pizza Bites
Would you please carry Snow Days Pizza Bites by Human Co? They are delicious, gluten-free, and made of good, tasty ingredients. Thank you!
Answer:

LessBulk Molasses
Please. We want bulk molasses 🙂
Answer:
Thank you for your suggestion. Many years ago, when we carried bulk molasses, it would ferment before we could sell it. If we have space in the future, we can reconsider bringing in bulk molasses in 1 gallon quantities if we have space and equipment to do so (we currently do not, but the bulk department can start a conversation)

LessMasks while shopping
Hello Coop- It is time to stop requiring mask. Please ask your members who shop here how they feel about still having to wear masks. Thank you! Stephanie.
Answer:
The Co-op is requiring approved face coverings for all shoppers, workers, and vendors.
As a business serving thousands of people per week, in crowded indoor spaces, proper masking is essential in protecting all members of our community, many of whom are not fully vaccinated.
The Co-op is watching for updates and guidance from state and local health agencies. We will immediately communicate any changes to our current policies.

Valencia HGO Oranges
Do not purchase any more Valencia oranges from HGO Farms. 'Biologique" organic is not the same as simply organic. HGO Farms Valencia Oranges taste terrible! I am returning some today. Do not give HGO Farms your business! Why does their fruit taste so bitter? very bad.
Answer:
Oof, sorry you got a bad orange. I will do some tasting and figure out if it was a one off or a problem with that label and adjust my ordering accordingly.
HGO is Homegrown Farms and actually a label I like to buy from as much as possible. They are a marketing group that is 100% certified organic and was founded by farmers for farmers. They represent a bunch of mid sized family farms and I’ve visited a couple of their farms and their packing shed during stone fruit season and citrus season. Their farmers are the kind of organic farmers who are dedicated to organic and not the kind who dabble in organic because they think they can get a premium price. Their fruit is usually high quality but produce is a tricky business and sometimes bad quality can slip through the cracks.
The term “Biologique” is actually the same as “Organic”; it’s labeled as Biologique for the Canadian market which has requirements around bilingual labels.

Bananas from Mexico
Don't buy Bananas from Mexico is helping the Drug cartel.
Answer:
I appreciate your concern and I’m not going to pretend I’m super informed about the complexities of the drug cartel. But I do know about our bananas and our options so I can give you information on that.
We get bananas from Mexico and Ecuador, but mostly from Mexico and we don’t have a choice when we buy them. They come from a label called Organics Unlimited under their GROW label (stands for Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers.) The GROW program provides grants to non-profits in the communities where the bananas are grown to initiatives most supporting children in health and education. While not actually a Fair Trade program, the model is similar where there is a small surcharge on every case of GROW bananas and that surcharge goes to the grants.
In July you may have noticed that we had a bunch of different labels of bananas for a week or so. There was a tropical storm that hit Mexico’s main banana growing region and our distributors had to sub in different labels while they waited for boats to arrive from Ecuador with more GROW Bananas. (Mexican bananas come by truck and Ecuadorian bananas come by boat.) During this time we relaxed our buying standards. While we got as many GROW cases as we could, we also had some by another socially responsible label called One and also bananas from Del Monte and Dole. This is the first time I’ve put Del Monte or Dole bananas on the shelf in my time as a produce manager. These corporations don’t line up with the values of the Co-op but since we had no other options on a handful of days that’s what we brought in.
In my dream world we would carry Equal Exchange bananas since they are Fair Trade certified and grown by small farmer cooperatives but our distributors have had a hard time incorporating them into their banana programs.
In the end, people eat bananas, and Mexican farmers grow them and we do our best to bring bananas to the co-op that have the most positive impact on the people of those communities and the land that they tend.

LessStevia Powder
Georgia/Vidalia Onions
Georgia onions waste of energy. Politically for me their politics are despicable.
Answer:
Not all food is local, and sometimes we get foods from far away.Ginger is from Peru, Bananas can be from Ecuador and Georgia is about the same distance from Olympia as the state Michoacán Mexico where most Mexican avocados come from.
Vidalias are my personal favorite onions. They’re the first new crop onions of the season and I could eat them off the grill all day long. If you prefer an onion from closer to home, we have yellow and red onions from California. Northwest onions are done until this year’s crop comes on. Soon enough we’ll have plenty of onions from Thurston county.
Thanks so much

LessWatercress and coconut ice cream
What happened to the pints of Coconut Bliss ice cream? It was my favorite. Also is the watercress gone for season? Thank you!
Answer:
Watercress is usually just a spring and fall thing and it’s usually only available for a few weeks. This year we saw watercress available for longer than we’ve ever seen it and I was surprised to see how much demand there was for it. Since it came from a couple mid sized Oregon farms I’m hoping they grow it in those volumes again. We’ll definitely bring it back whenever it’s available to us.
Thanks for your question about Coconut Bliss. The Co-op has been getting a lot of questions about this product.
Based on the conversation with Coconut Bliss and careful consideration of various points of feedback the Co-op has received from co-workers and customers, the Co-op will continue to carry Coconut Bliss ice cream bars and sandwiches for the time being and consider whether to carry their pints in the future. Some of the images on the new Coconut Bliss pints are racially and culturally unsettling and do not meet our interpretation of the Co-op’s packaging guidelines.

LessMacadamia and pine nut freshness
Macadamia and pine nuts really should be refrigerated since they go rancid quickly.
Answer:
Thank you for your concern. Macadamia Nuts last for at least 5 months at room temperature. We have a turnover of Macadamia Nuts that mitigates the potential for rancidity of this product. Pine nuts are displayed in the scoop bins during the winter months. When the weather is warmer, the pine nuts are packaged or placed in a container in the grab and go display. During the very warm season, the macadamia nuts will
also be refrigerated.
Slow honey and molasses
A very inexpensive heated seed sprouting mat under the honey and molasses might just save members a lot of time filling containers. Thank you!
Answer:
The reason the honey has been pouring slow is because it was crystalizing in the container. This is something we do not want to serve our members. We are now rotating our honey bins more frequently to prevent this and it has been going very well. We have discussed this idea in the past and intentionally decided against it. We do not want to put a heating mat under the dispensers because of dangers of electrical fires if it is left on for long periods of time. Long term exposure to heat, even at low temps, also degrades the quality of the honey (especially the raw honey).
Please give it a try now and let us know if you notice any improvements or if the same issues are occurring.
Thank you very much for shopping at the Coop.
Sincerely,
The East Side Bulk Department

LessStore hours
Please stay open until 9pm again. I work long 12 hour shifts that end at 7:30pm. With the new hours I am unable to go food shopping on days that I work. I really miss this.
Answer:
Thank you for the suggestion about our store hours, as we’ve not received much member feedback about our current practices since last year. We are now exploring the option of keeping the Westside open longer. Our Eastside store, impacted by our Order for Pickup Service, is less likely to be able to stay open longer until more COVID related restrictions are lifted. We are weighing many factors related to this decision, such as labor availability, cost and other needs for cleaning and stocking while the store is closed. We hope to have a decision made by April about hours for late Spring and Summer.
Thank you again for the feedback about what would work better for you, and for supporting the Co-op, and I will let you know when we are able to adjust hours to accommodate more customers like yourself.

It seems you've quit carrying Amy's tofu gluten free organic pot pie. I used to buy one them almost every time I came here - at least 1x a week. Anyway, I miss it a lot and hope you might reconsider carrying it. p.s. anything that's gluten free is always better if it's organic.

Can the scale be moved?
Move scale to remove bottleneck.
Answer:
Hello. Thanks for your suggestion. In these times it is difficult to remove all bottlenecks, although we are doing our best. In the bulk department we don’t have a lot of space to do much rearranging, so that scale will remain in it’s present location. We will look into acquiring another scale and see if we can find a second location for it.

Straus European Butter
Please re-order more Straus European Butter 85% butterfood. This is an amazing product which no other store carries. Thank you!
Answer:
Straus is now experiencing availability issues. The official word we’ve heard is that the butter shortage is related to the pandemic. We will probably not receive any more deliveries of Straus butter until late January.
In general, certified organic butter will likely be in short supply through the coming months. We’ll do our best to have multiple high-quality options available at the Co-op. Many of the highest quality butters that are likely to remain steadily available are grass fed European-style butters from Ireland or mainland Europe. They are not certified organic, but the EU has very high standards for quality.
Thank you!

Bulk Almonds
I don't know why the West coop uses a different supplier for almonds than the East coop almonds. The West Co-op almonds are much better tasting and lower price. I do all my shopping at the Eastside store because it's a far superior store. But I have to go all the way to the Westside for their superior almonds. Please get better raw organic almonds! Maybe order them from the West co-op!! Thanks!
Answer:
You might be speaking of the unpasteurized almonds from Sicily, Italy as their flavor spectrum has a
range to include bitter. The context is not “superior” almonds. I think it is a matter of preference and a cultured taste and expectation of how almonds should taste. We extend variety to our customers/vendors so they may have options. We appreciate your suggestion, it is important feedback. At this time we are not introducing additional almonds to our bulk display.
Jovial Cassava Flour Noodles
Jovial just came out with an organic cassava flour noodle. It'd be rad to have it on the shelf! Thanks!

More affordable wine
More affordable organic wines please! FRA has others besides red.
Answer:
The west side has been selling wine at a pace faster than we could keep stocked, so we got rid of the baskets and put in more shelving. We invite you to come in and see our expanded display and additions.
Some fun facts to know about the wines on the Westside.
Wines under $12.00 = 18
14 of which are Organic
We have a total of 34 Organic wines and carry a total of 47 wines
13 Vegan Wines and all Domaine Bousquet and Stellar Organic wines are Vegan.
As far as cheaper or lower priced wines. Some things to keep in mind: many of our wines are certified fair trade, organic and vegan friendly wines. We have wines that are dry farmed or Biodynamic. We have great quality wines from all over the united states and world. Also, we cannot buy huge quantities of wines which would help drive the price down for the consumer. Again, 14 of our wines are Organic and Under $12.00.

We can look into it later this year in the cool weather months and see

Tigernut flour
Please stock tigernut flour
Answer:
Currently, our main distributor dropped all tigernut products and flours.
For a bit, we were ordering direct, however their minimum order was so big and we do not get other products from them that sell well, we were stuck having to order half a years supply. Also, we had a little confusion around ordering. It all adds up sadly not having a reasonable source presently. If you find one, let us know. Thanks, Bradley
Roma tomatoes
My family and I regularly purchase the Roma tomatoes for multiple recipes. Today was the first time that I was unable to purchase the Romas, as they were shiny with food-grade wax. Please purchase the other Roma tomatoes which the Co-op has been stocking for years, from the same farm. We are not able to buy tomatoes with food grade wax all over it. Not all organic foods are created equal.
Answer:
I saw those Romas and wasn’t very excited about them either. Those will never be my first choice and when it comes to Romas we usually don’t have many options.
Here’s how it works: We order from two distributors. With most things we switch between the two depending on price and quality. With most things we get to pick which farm/label we get, a few we don’t. Roma quality and availability is finicky day to day and we never get to choose between labels. There are almost always issues with ripeness at one distributor or the other. So, my point is that with Romas, on a lot of days I only have one good option or no good option.
We’ll always lean away from the waxed fruit if we have options but if that’s what we can get, I’d rather have waxed Romas than no Romas. Sorry we didn’t have what you were looking for when you came in. Especially in these times of limiting trips in public, that must have been super frustrating.

Of course, we have 8 flavors on the shelf.
ground elk
Pleeeeease carry this product. It is Amazing - Got it at Sacramento Food Co-op and Ashland Food Co-op has it, too. Durham Ranch New Zealand Elk. Frozen Ground Elk.
Answer:
Hello and thank you for your suggestion!
Because venison is such a unique product and something that is hard to find, we have toyed with the idea of carrying this item specifically for a long time. Oh how we wish there was a domestic venison grower that met our product selection guidelines and was available to us, we would love to carry that product! Over and over again, the conversation within the Meat Dept comes back around to the fact this product- Durham Ranch Ground Elk- is sourced from over 7,000 miles away, and this alone has been enough for us to repeatedly decide not to carry it.
While we understand there may be desire for us to offer it on our shelves, we feel that because it is available elsewhere, because of the carbon footprint of air-freighting it to the U.S. market, and because putting it on our shelves means taking something else off to make space for it, we won’t be bringing it in at this time.
We have been on the lookout for any other options available that we might be able to offer, and will continue to keep our eyes open for that. We appreciate your suggestion and participating in your Co-op’s processes!
Thanks again,

Lessbulk pricing
I don't want to sanction people who are housing insecure, or who are busy and need to shop from among the packaged products for convenience. However, for environmental reasons I suggest making it cheaper to buy bulk (where there is a bulk option versus bottled or packaged). I mean this for all bulk items whether dry, liquid, refrigerated, or other. Also maybe add per-purchase discounts for those who buy bulk and bring their own container. Maybe money off per container? I try very hard to wash and reuse containers, and to reuse bags for produce. Since I'm stretched for cash, though, it REALLY disappoints me that often I could get the same or similar product cheaper by purchasing it pre-packaged. This might also help make more shelf space since theoretically it would reduce consumption of packaged products. Thanks.
Answer:
Thank you for your interest and your feedback. We strive to keep all of our prices low while upholding our contracts and agreements with our suppliers, which seek to reward producers with fair prices as well as our members. While we share your concern for the environment, our bulk prices are as low as we can currently make them. We do offer discounts for reused containers in our salad bar, and will give thought to how we can expand this benefit. It is helpful to know what specific products you are referring to. Per pound, most of our bulk prices are very competitive and we offer a great deal.

sugar
Please carry Rapunzel organic sugar in the stores, again! This brand is superior to the wholesome sugar brand, which is more common, and is available at most major chains, such as Safeway. Rapunzel is a small, organic brand which is harder to find. But it is available! It would be great if the Co-op could work with this company once again.
Answer:
I agree, I love that sugar as well. Our distributor discontinued this product. It may be worth a try to ask them to bring it back as they carry some other Rapunzel products. As for working with this company directly, they are in Germany and it may not be worth our while for one product. So, it is not looking good and… I will keep trying to find a way to bring it back.
Thank you.
cocoa powder
Please carry OMG organic cocoa powder in the store. This is a very good, a delicious brand of cocoa powder. Much better than Nvitas. omgsuperfoods.com OMG organic cocoa powder is made with less heat than Nvitas, which retains its flavor, and also makes it more healthy. This is a staple item for people who love to bake. Please consider working with this company, and offering their products at the Co-op.
Answer:
Hi,
I have sent in a question to this company about their fair trade practices. If I get confirmation and some good information about the partnerships they have with farmers than I will look furthering into bringing in this product.
Thank you for the suggestion, this Cocoa powder looks delicious and nutritious.

coconut oil
Is there a way to provide bulk coconut oil? Thanks
Answer:
Hi, we appreciate your suggestion. Unfortunately, this would require a heated dispenser that would be too large to fit in our current set. Also, we aren’t sure how it would affect the quality of the oil to constantly keep it in its liquefied state. One suggestion would be to special order a bucket of coconut oil yourself; it is available in various quantities, and you would save an additional 10%. Thanks!
Lessplastic bags in produce
Please do not put the "heavy duty" plastic bags in produce dept. Too much plastic!! Just had a customer who used 10 bags - 1 for each produce item. Use them in bulk only!
Answer:
We stock the “heavy duty” bags specifically for produce. The lighter duty bags blow out when they are filled with apple and oranges. We’ve started stocking a paper alternative with a handle that people seem to be using more and more. We’ve been offering more paper in the produce department and we will soon offer a smaller bag for when someone doesn’t need a big one.
That said, I hear your concern about folks using a lot of bags for produce. I’m surprised (frankly, shocked) by it a lot myself. I think there are folks working on signage to encourage people use reusable bags.
Thanks for thinking about stuff like this.

yogurt & mold
Several times I bought Coyo Yogurt in small plastic containers - mold although not reached expiration date. Check distribution chain?
Answer:
Sorry you’ve gotten bad products. I hope you came in and got credit for them. I’ve been in contact directly with the company (Coyo) multiple times now, and honestly their answers to this point have been in my opinion kind of dismissive of the problem. I’ve been told that this is an rare yet ongoing issue with the probiotics sometimes going into “overdrive” and causing an explosion in growth, and that they have no way of telling which ones will or won’t do it. They also don’t have batch numbers so it’s next to impossible to see which ones may develop a problem. I’m sorry I don’t have more info, but I am keeping a close eye on it.
Lesssprouted wheat buns
A2 cheeses
Does the Coop carry A2 cheeses?
Answer:
I got your request for A2 cheese. Were you aware that all sheep and goat milk has A2 protein? We have many sheep and goat milk cheese options.
There are not a lot of cow milk cheesemakers who specifically breed for all A2 genetics in their herd. One reason is that as cheese ages, the protein breaks down into small peptide chains, which would probably make the A1 or A2 origin irrelevent.
That being said, we do proudly carry Cascadia Creamery cheeses. They are based in Troutdale, WA and they have an all A2 genetics herd. We usually always have Cascadia’s “Glacier Blue” and “Sleeping Beauty” cheeses. We occasionally have others that they make. http://www.cascadiacreamery.com/beyond_organic.html
Here is a great article on A2 milk and cheese.

Lessalternative milk +protein
Good Karma original unsweetened refrigerated +protein in 1/2 gallon size - instead of the one we have now which is original & unsweetened but no protein...! 🙂
Answer:
With limited space and an abundance of alternative milk options, I’m apprehensive about bringing in another product, which is untested and I don’t have an idea of what sales would be. Or if it would sell better than the products we currently have on that shelf, which sell very well. The only option I could see would be to replace the unsweetened (no protein) flax milk and put the protein one in its space. But again, I’m weary of doing this, since the unsweetened is one of our biggest sellers. Long story short, I’ll contemplate options, and in the meantime if you’d like to special order a case yourself or with friends, I’d be happy to place that order for you.
Lessorganic goat cheese
Is it possible to stock organic goat cheese?
Answer:
Hello,
What a coincidence, we ordered a new organic chevre from Amaltheia Organic Dairy today! Also, we always stock Montchevre organic chevre in both plain and garlic herb flavored. We are not offered many Certified Organic goat cheeses outside of these fresh cheeses but are always on the lookout for what our distributors stock. Many of the small goat farms and creameries do use highly ethical and sustainable practices but can not afford the cost to be USDA Certified Organic. Most are very open about their practices, have websites describing them, and will answer any questions or concerns you have via email.
I would like to also direct you to cheese from our local Lost Peacock Creamery. They are not certified organic but are dedicated to sustainable agricultural practices. They are Certified Humane. Their goats graze on pasture and are supplementally fed local grain and certified organic alfalfa from Eastern Washington. There is no soy, wheat or corn in their feed. It is an all Non-GMO diet. They don’t use pesticides, hormones or anti-biotics.
They make two aged cheeses, an Asiago style and a Gouda style. When the goats are producing milk in the spring, summer and fall they also make fresh chevres and Halloumi, a cheese you can throw on the grill like a steak! Look for these at both stores. We sell whatever they have available, depending on the time of year.
Thanks for caring about these issues and for your question.
Lessbreath mints or spray

Answer:
Hi there!
Currently, we do not have breath mints at the west side Olympia Food Co-op. However, we do have sugar-free breath freshening gum on aisle 2 (a couple/few shelves below chocolate bars). Breath spray can be found in our oral care set, on the same shelf as mouth wash and above toothpaste.

Hi, we miss it too, sorry to say it was discontinued in bulk. I believe we do still carry it in packages. We are trying out other options, the Cup 4 Cup is indeed very different. The Eastside is trying out Bob’s 1 to 1; if you happen to try it, let us know if you like it any better. These are the only options available in bulk from any of our distributors at this time.

slow growth chicken
Can you bring Mary's slow growth chicken? They are excellent! Thanks!
Answer:
Hello- Thank you for your inquiry.
Upon researching Mary’s Chicken website, I believe this to be what they call their Heirloom variety. My supplier, Plymouth Inc. out of Seattle, can get this for us on an 8 day lead time order (so I would need to order on a Sunday for the next next Monday delivery). It looks like the pricing is in the ballpark of the Draper Valley Ranger and the Mary’s Organic lines that we carry. I might look at bringing in a few options of this Heirloom “slow growth” line sometime in the future, but in the meantime, I would also like to point you towards the locally grown pastured chicken we carry from Chehalis Valley Farm. It is available in the frozen meat section, is non-GMO certified, is very local, and quite delicious!
I am more than happy to order a case of the Mary’s Heirloom chicken just for you (and it’d qualify for 10% off as a special order!), it looks like I can get you any number of cuts (breasts, thighs, whole bird etc). Call the Eastside store if you would like to place an order for a case and we can get started on it for you.
Also- maryschicken.com has a lot of great info and contact information straight to the family farm itself!
Hope this is helpful, and thanks for the suggestion!

Our distributor for Silly Zaks Pie Crust stopped carrying them so we immediately found another distributor but they have been out of stock. Lessshopping carts
More small size carts please! Larger ones are harder to navigate in narrow isles. Thanks!
Answer:
The crowded aisles at the westside can be challenging. We only have room to store one size of carts at the westside store, so we have to compromise and use the smallest available full-size carts. We only have 10 of them, so that helps limit how many can be blocking the aisles at any point in time.
Lesscoconut ice cream
Please carry coconut bliss coffee flavor. You have many chocolate flavors and zero coffee.
Answer:
I will try out the Coconut Bliss Coffee flavor as soon as I am able to sell through some of our other flavors we are trying to discontinue. Thank you for the suggestion.
Lessavocados
I love the Equal Exchange avocados! They riped perfectly. Thank you. (please keep them) 🙂
Answer:
We love the Equal Exchange Avocados as well, but as with all produce their availability is affected in ways beyond our control. It can be related to supply and demand (not available at all, or the price is so high we don’t believe it reasonable to offer to our customers) or quality issues – mainly if the avocados are overripe/gone bad already. We do try to prioritize them over other brands as much as possible, and will keep the enthusiasm for them in mind in making our choices as produce buyers. Thanks for your comment!
Lessvegan cheese: cheddar & mozzarella
Requesting that you continue to carry Parmela's Vegan / cashew cheddar and mozzarella "cheeses" please. They do not contain palm oil and are delicious. Thank you!
Answer:
We do carry this brand. We usually only have one flavor of the shreds at a time due to space issues though.

strawberries and cucumbers
We do not need strawberries from California and cucumbers from Mexico. Both are poor quality and expensive. Bring local. Please!
Answer:
Thanks for your comment. Our produce managers subscribe to the idea that we should bring in produce from as close to home as possible.
As for those Mexican mini cucumbers you saw, we’ve been buying mini cukes mostly from Indigo Farm here in Olympia. Shoppers love the mini cucumbers and when Indigo couldn’t keep up with sales, we’ve subbed in from the distributor and the are from Mexico.
When it comes to strawberries, most of the year California is all that is available to us. For a short window in June we can get them from Thurston county and sometimes we can get them from Oregon. So, if we only brought in local strawberries we would have them for a month per year.
I appreciate your commitment to buying local and thanks for the input. We will continue to buy as much local as is available to us, but when it’s not, I appreciate being able to source produce from other regions.

For now, the Olympia Food Co-op can only sell pre-packaged meat items. Someday perhaps we will have a butchery onsite too! Thank you for your suggestion.

There are no products currently in your store that are coconut free - this is a company dedicated to healthy options. It is an Ashland, Oregon based company. Thanks for considering.

Answer:
Hello, thank you for your support of Washington artisan cheesemakers. We have proudly carried Tieton Farm & Creamery cheeses since 2015. They are one of our favorite United States artisans. We sell all of their cheese but we don’t have all of them all of the time. We did sell Samish Bay Vache and Ladysmith in the past. They were not popular enough to stock except on occasion. We attend the Washington Artisan Cheesemaker’s Festival every year and are thrilled that Olympia’s own Lost Peacock won 2nd place for their Halloumi! LessRecycling for #5 plastics?
Hi, I called to find out if the co-op had heard of the Gimme 5 Program and the person I spoke to said that it might be something you might be interested in. It's a recycling option for number 5 plastic. I don't know a lot about it, but for example, plastic starbucks cups and other #5's can't be recycled in our street side bins... Here is a link: https://www.preserveproducts.com/recycle/programs/gimme-5-program-171 It should explain everything I hope. Maybe you could help bring the Preserve bin to Olympia? I don't want to add to the landfills! If I can somehow help out, let me know.
Answer:
Thanks for the suggestion! I as the Recycling Coordinator will look into this. In the past the Co-op has refrained from specific recycling programs that collect things like light bulbs or clamshells or other hard to recycle items because successful participation requires accumulating a lot of a specific type of thing. With our stores as jam packed as they are, it is hard to figure out where we would put such a bin to recycle things, or where we would store them while we wait to have enough to constitute a “load”. So far, there are other things, like redirecting compost to local farms, that have seemed to be smarter uses of our time and space. However, I really appreciate hearing from you to know that you would like to see this kind of thing, because it helps move it up the priority list to know that shoppers want to have the Co-op be a place they can recycle difficult things.

real bowls for the salad bar
I think it would b e great to have some real bowls and/or plates to have for the salad bar for those who want to eat at the Co-op. Would be less take away containers thrown away. Even just like 10.
Answer:
We think that would be great too. Sadly our current size and facilities are not able to accommodate that. One day when we are bigger, we aim to provide nice reusable plate ware. Also, there are always free usable containers available on the shelf in the salad bar corner. You are welcome to use any container, such as your own from home. Make sure to weigh it before getting any salad (scale is also on that shelf in the salad bar corner). And! We will give you 5¢ whenever you use any container that is re-used!

vegan sandwiches
No vegan sandwiches AGAIN. More sales missed. This is very disappointing. Animal flesh is going down hill because people are educating themselves that it's wrong & unnecessary to use others bodies.
Answer:
We strive to support people who have a vegan diet. We try to always have a vegan sandwich available. There are also many delicious vegan options on our salad bar.

Pacific Ave Island & Crosswalks
I live on the Eastside - I no longer have room to pull into the center turning lane during rush hour because of the close proximity of pedestrian island. Why was it placed so close to the Co-op? During rush hour, I have not enough time or room to get into the center lane to make a left. Not a good solution! And I have to get on I-5!
Answer:
Hi! It’s true that the placement is no good for turning left. Unfortunately we weren’t consulted on design or placement. There’s not anything we can do, but we do encourage you to contact City of Olympia. It’s probably too late for this project, but maybe in the future, they’ll check with local businesses during planning.

sale prices incorrect at registers
I keep getting charged regular price for sale items. Since i get email receipts i don't notice till i'm home, and it seems petty to go back for a dollar or so. Also since i receive the low-income discount i don't want to complain. But many times they are things i'm only buying because of the sale price, or i buy several to stock up - to later see I was charged the full amount is frustrating. It happens at both stores. It seems like the price isn't entered into the computer system. I try to pay attention as the items are getting scanned, but it's hard to do while also (inevitably) chatting and bagging groceries. It's starting to add up though over the last several months that i have been noticing this. Thank you! I <3 OFC!
Answer:
It is important at some point to come in with copies of your receipts and get refunds for those mis-rung items. It is our error, and we try to fix all issues prior to specials, but we don’t always catch everything.
We are good on our word. If we promised you a price, that’s the price you should pay and never should feel bad about making us correct this!
Lessshoes policy?
Does the Co-op have a shoes-required policy? If so, how can I most effectively contribute to a potential change in the policy? I would enter the Co-op more often if I knew that shoes weren't required.
Answer:
Thank you for your question. The Co-op does not require that our shoppers wear shoes, however, glass is broken frequently on our tile floors, and although we do our best to sweep up the shards, some may remain.
Lessyogurt & cottage cheese & pudding
Can we get these delicious items again sometime? I will buy them regularly. Organic Valley vanilla grass milk yogurt, Organic Valley low fat cottage cheese in the blue tub, and Petit Pot de Creme yummy 'lil pudding in glass.
Answer:
All three of those products we’ve carried in the past, and they didn’t sell well enough to carry them anymore. We can special order a case, but unfortunately we can’t justify the cost, and potential loss, if sales trends stay as they were, and we lose a large amount of product which goes to pull dates. Sorry 🙁

Hi. This product is currently going through a packaging change. You are welcome to try and order it by the case, 12 of 16oz., but I am not sure it will arrive.
I will not carry it on the shelf. We have limited space and I try to not carry products with erythritol in them and prefer customers to order it for themselves so that they are aware of the ingredients.
Lesswheat grass
For the last month the wheat grass has been 8" tall - it's terrible! It used to always be about 3" tall. I buy it for my cat and now it only lasts 2 days before it gets brown. Please please get short wheat grass again!

Thanks for the feedback. We just had one of our local farmers start to grow it. It seems like everyone wants it shorter and they’ve already started to send it that way. Let us know if you like it better or it it’s still too tall.

Can you get these? Gardein, The Ultimate Beefless Burger. They sell them at Whole Foods.
Answer:
We carry these now, east and west, and right now they are on sale! Also of note, the westside will be carrying them on and off all summer depending on pricing, availability, and sales space needs. Likely this summer we will have them often, and I think we have 4 – 6 options of non meat burgers available. In winter, the sales of burger like products decreases, and we change it up.

Lessmoses sleeper cheese
Please carry Jasper Hills farm "Moses Sleeper" cheese. It is the best cheese of its kind that I've tasted in the USA. It reminds me of France. It's REALLY GOOD!
Answer:

LessCo-op packaged cheese
Mozzarella cheese that is wrapped by the Olympia Food Co-op appears to be cut with a dirty cheese knife because after a week or two, it begins to mold in different colors. This never used to happen. The problem started around December. Please make sure the knife is clean and the cheese cutters are properly trained.
Answer:
Hello. I’m sorry to hear you are experiencing this problem. I assure you that all cheese packagers have up to date food safety cards and have been trained in proper “Best Practices” which of course includes sanitizing the cheese cutting wire board between each cheese. The same people have been packaging long before this issue started for you. The newest person has been packaging at both stores for over a year, and the most senior packager has been working in cheese here for about 20 years. That being said, I will check in with each worker.
Our cooler temperatures are checked multiple times each day, and are in the proper temperature zone. It is possible that the moisture or salt content has changed slightly. I can email the company to find out. Per any reputable cheese text, I suggest that you buy only the amount of cheese you will use in a week or less. Also, you may want to check your refrigerator temperature to make sure it is between 33 degrees to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Thirdly, if you open a cheese that is purchased in plastic, rewrap any left over cheese TIGHTLY in a NEW CLEAN piece of plastic wrap or cheese paper.
We have not had any other customer comments or complaints of this nature. Please let us know if the problem continues and include the “PACKED ON” date from the Co-op cheese label, if possible. I hope these suggestions have been helpful.

Yes, we know about this farm/cheese. It is good! We decided to go with our friends down the street at Lost PEACOCK which we love. The textures are different an we think both are excellent. If we ordered cheese from Twisp, the shipping cost through UPS or FedEx would make it pretty expensive.
