Community

At the Olympia Food Co-op, community is at the heart of what we do. As a not-for-profit organization, our bottom line includes a commitment to people, not just profit. We offer community classes for only $7 each, participate in community giving, operate a volunteer led free store our at our Westside location, incorporate Anti-oppression practices into our work, have ethically oriented product selection guidelines, support go local efforts, strive to foster food justice, and offer recipes.

Making healthy food accessible and affordable is really important to us – it’s even in our purpose statement. We strive to provide a wide assortment of foods to meet many dietary needs at the most affordable price we can offer you and place a special emphasis on foods that are organic and locally produced. Our purpose statement also includes the following:

  • Provide information about food
  • Make good food accessible to more people
  • Support efforts to increase democratic process
  • Support efforts to foster a socially and economically egalitarian society
  • Provide information about collective process and consensus decision making
  • Support local production
  • See to the long term health of the business
  • Assist in the development of local community resources

We support our community in a variety of ways including community giving efforts like donations, sponsorships, round-ups at the register, a 10% discount to low income members, supporting the Community Sustaining Fund, hosting the Free store at the Westside and a running a Curbside program at no additional cost. We also provide local jobs, sell local goods, offer farmers fair pay for their items and make efforts to support our local economy wherever possible.
